Five people have been charged with the murder of 21-year-old Kaleem Rafeek in Birchfields Park, Rusholme last month.

The part-time student and doorman was found with multiple stab wounds in the early hours of the morning of Sunday 29th March near Birchfields Road, where he was pronounced dead.

Nine men were arrested soon after and five have now been charged with murder and attempted murder. Aged between 19 and 23, the five all hail from the nearby Longsight area. The other four men have been bailed pending further inquiries.

“He had a big generous golden heart and a beautiful smile,” said mother Fuzna Rafeek. “I wish every mother could have a son like mine.”

Described as bubbly, generous and very hard working, Rafeek worked at John Lewis and as a doorman when not studying.

Ismail Mohammed Rafeek, the man’s father, said: “He was my only son and best friend.”
