Deadmau5, Manchester Warehouse Project

| Oct. 26, 2009 |

IF THERE WERE any mice crawling around the car park under Piccadilly
Train Station last Friday, they would certainly have been caught in
the trap of Warehouse Project’s latest evening of progressive house
topped off by two and a half hours of one of the summer’s biggest
success stories.

No doubt with the help of the huge success of I Remember earlier this
year, Karl Zimmerman pulled in the most up-for-it crowd Warehouse has
seen for a long time. The biggest cheers of the night were reserved
for the Canadian DJ’s own tracks, notably from latest album, For Lack
of a Better Name. With its infectious riff behind Rob Swire’s vocal,
Ghosts’n’Stuff reinvigorated a crowd that was already on its tip-toes
for a glance of Zimmerman’s ridiculously outsized headwear.

The massive mouse head that Deadmau5 insists on wearing, maybe solely
for the reception he receives when he removes it, was just one of the
masterful strokes of charisma the brushed their way through the star’s
blistering set.

Rather than the ostentatious crowd pleasing
prancing-about-in-front-of-his-own-four-foot-high-name antics of the
likes of Erol Alken, Zimmerman kept it real thrilling his audience
with nothing but a bit of cartoon headwear and an ability to play the
right song at the right time—its simplicity winning over the hearts
and minds of those packed into the damp and grimy underground car park
that has made its name as one of Manchester’s most prestigious venues.
